Statistical Analysis
What Is This?

Estimated volume of woodfuel (firewood and wood converted to charcoal) produced and consumed in Nigeria each year, in solid cubic metres, following the FAO methodology.

How to Read

Values are in solid cubic metres of wood. Nigeria is Africa's third-largest woodfuel producer. A flat or rising line means dependence on traditional biomass is not declining.

Why It Matters

Fuelwood dependency drives deforestation, desertification, and indoor air pollution. It is the primary fuel for over 70% of Nigerian households and a key indicator of energy poverty and climate vulnerability.

Current Signal

Fuelwood consumption is 4.5% above the 5-year average — a critical energy poverty signal.

Year-on-Year Change

Each bar compares a period to the same period one year earlier, stripping out seasonal effects. Green is growth, red is decline.

Reading:Latest year-on-year change: +0.0% (2022). Output is higher than a year ago.

Period-on-Period Change

Short-term momentum: how each period compares to the one immediately before it. Useful for spotting turning points earlier than the annual view.

Reading:Most recent move: +0.0% versus the prior period (2022).

3-Period Rolling Average

The faint line is raw data; the bold line is a 3-period trailing average that smooths out noise so the underlying direction is visible.

Reading:Smoothing window set to 3 periods (annual data). The averaged line filters short-term spikes to expose the trend.

All analyses computed at query time from committed NEDB records for Fuelwood Consumption. Percentages are in percentage points; ±2σ covers ~95% of normal variation.

About this Series

Estimated volume of fuelwood consumed by households and commercial users, reported quarterly by state.

Source agency: ECN / Federal Ministry of Environment
Methodology Note

Derived from household energy surveys and Forest Management Unit records. Charcoal is converted to wood equivalent using a 6:1 ratio. Significant estimation uncertainty - values should be treated as indicative. Aligned with FAO WISDOM methodology.
