Statistical Analysis
What Is This?

Total electricity generated at grid-connected power plants in Nigeria each month, covering thermal (gas), hydroelectric, and renewable sources. Measured in gigawatt-hours (GWh) at the plant busbar.

How to Read

This is gross generation — what the plants produce before accounting for their own energy use or transmission losses. Compare to Electricity Sent Out for net output, and to Electricity Consumption for what actually reaches end users.

Why It Matters

Generation capacity is the ceiling for Nigeria's electricity supply. The gap between installed capacity (MW) and actual generation (GWh) reveals how much of the system is idle — a key indicator of infrastructure and fuel supply health.

Current Signal

Electricity generation is 44.5% above the 5-year average.

Year-on-Year Change

Each bar compares a period to the same period one year earlier, stripping out seasonal effects. Green is growth, red is decline.

Reading:Latest year-on-year change: +10.6% (2025). Output is higher than a year ago.

Period-on-Period Change

Short-term momentum: how each period compares to the one immediately before it. Useful for spotting turning points earlier than the annual view.

Reading:Most recent move: +10.6% versus the prior period (2025).

3-Period Rolling Average

The faint line is raw data; the bold line is a 3-period trailing average that smooths out noise so the underlying direction is visible.

Reading:Smoothing window set to 3 periods (annual data). The averaged line filters short-term spikes to expose the trend.

All analyses computed at query time from committed NEDB records for Electricity Generation. Percentages are in percentage points; ±2σ covers ~95% of normal variation.

About this Series

Total electricity generated at grid-connected power plants in Nigeria, reported monthly. Represents gross generation at the busbar.

Source agency: TCN / NERC (Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission)
Methodology Note

Generation data is collected from GenCos and TCN via the Market Management System. Figures are gross generation at plant terminals before deducting own-use and transmission losses. Methodology follows IEA/IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics guidelines.
